Coastal Skipper & Yachtmaster

The next RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster course (Nav 2) will start on Thursday 28th September 2006. You will need to enroll at The Sussex Downs College Centre at Denton Island, Newhaven.

This course covers the advanced theory of navigation, tides, weather and a wide range of other advanced sailing and motor boating subjects. Although there is no formal entry level for the course the chances of successfully passing are less if the candidate has not done the RYA Day Skipper shorebased course or has experience in skippering and navigating a small boat (not just crewing). Although the classroom hours amount to only 2 hours per week there is also a need for 4 to 6 hours per week in private study and homework depending on previous courses and experience.

There are continuous assessments throughout the course and 3 final exams, which must all be passed.

A copy of the Day Skipper syllabus for the entry level is in the Day Skipper page. Although there is a period in the course for revision of this it is necessarily only brief and insufficient if the candidate lacks the knowledge or experience.

If you have any doubt about your ability to undertake the course then please discuss it with the tutor. The tutor is Bill Giles and he can be contacted on

077 203 99 189 or bill@billgiles.org.uk.
